Travel to Air Day by Airbus

  • Combined Air Day and bus travel from anywhere in Cornwall
  • Interchangable tickets on First, Summercourt and Western Greyhound bus services
  • Rail link from Redruth Station

Visitors to the 2011 Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose Air Day will be able to benefit from direct public transport links into the event.  The ‘Airbus’ scheme enables visitors to purchase a combined Air Day ticket and return bus fare from anywhere in Cornwall on First, Summercourt and Western Greyhound bus services.  Airbus aims to encourage attendance by bus and rail users and gives those who would normally drive the chance to leave the car at home.

The Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose Air Day will take place on Wednesday 20th July.  Action-packed from start to finish, the skies above Helston will be filled with magnificent sights and sounds from across the world of aviation, both past and present.  Culdrose's Merlins, Sea Kings, Hawks and King Airs will open the programme in a unique, mass formation flypast.  Aerobatic display teams, including the Red Arrows and the Royal Jordanian Falcons, and the iconic aircraft of the Royal Navy Historic Flight and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will all be giving dazzling displays.  Visitors will also be able to get up close to aircraft and meet serving aircrew and members of the Search and Rescue Squadron who fly on daring rescue missions, putting their own lives at risk to save others.

The scheme offers a fast way to and from the event and discounted admission: Adult £16; child (5-15 years) £6; family £35 (for up to 2 adults and 3 children).  Bus travel and Air Day admission for children under 5 is free.  Saving Air Day visitors both time and money, the unique Airbus scheme routes the current timetable’s bus services to RNAS Culdrose across the airfield before and after the flying display (0900-1300 and 1700-1800), leaving behind traffic congestion on the A3083 Helston-Lizard road.  Passengers are conveyed directly to and from the Air Day public enclosure with ‘buses continuing on their normal routes on leaving the airfield.  During the flying display, ‘bus services use the A3083 in the normal way.  First will also operate a special Airbus return shuttle service between Helston’s Coinagehall Street, Tesco and RNAS Culdrose, supplementing the current timetabled services.

Airbus tickets are available on buses on Air Day, visitors buying them on the initial bus they board.  Airbus tickets are interchangeable at no extra charge between the three companies’ services.  To encourage visitors to come by train, First have introduced an extra 34 service to Redruth station shortly after the end of the flying display.
